Antlers is a supernatural horror film that follows a middle school teacher and her brother, who is a police officer. It takes place in a rural town in Oregon where there are myths about a supernatural creature with antlers. The original idea came from a short story called “The Quiet Boy” by Nick Antosca.
The teacher, named Julia Meadows, becomes concerned for one of her students because of his changed attitude in class. When she looks further into it with her brother, they discover that there is a supernatural being living in his house with him.
The premise of this movie sounds interesting and we believe that the monster is based on the legends of the wendigo from Native American Algonquian tribes. It is said to be a human-like monster in some stories, or a human possessed by a spirit in others. Although, most of the myths agree on the presence of the creature causing murder and cannibalism.
We see some of this in the trailer when half of a man is found in a mine. His body was destroyed and chewed up, suggesting that he was mauled by a large animal. However, the townsfolk seem to know that a normal animal could not have done this.
In some versions of the Algonquian mythology, greed and destruction of the environment can also lead to the appearance of a wendigo. We are interested to know what form of this creature is going to be captured in the film, as the story has evolved over time. Overall though, the stories contain themes of starvation in the cold and harsh winter months. Knowing this, we can probably expect to see acts of cannibalism in the film.
This movie looks interesting- the story is what caught our attention. With its basis in Algonquian legends, it might give some insight into their traditional beliefs as well. We will not know for sure until we can finally see the film.
